 The nouveau riche, especially in the Mekong Delta, prefers ‘nouveau’ forms of entertainment befitting their newly-acquired status, such as taking a nude bath on a desert beach with local call girls whom they call ‘ecological girls’ or ‘ clean vegetables.’ These are mostly young, good-looking women who are so defined to differentiate them from professional prostitutes – "polluted” females considered unsafe for men on the lookout for pleasures. These girls may have a steady job or are unemployed, single or married, but all are willing to accompany rich men during their fun-seeking trips for a handsome payment. The temptation of earning big money for a day of fun and entertainment with rich men have turned many local girls away from conceptions of ‘virtuous’ women in this conservative Vietnam. Though not prostitutes, they agree to engage in drinking, singing and nude bath and other entertainment at night in return for VND1 million (US$50) -- more than half of their monthly factory salary. Going into hotels with the men is not unthinkable for these girls mainly in the age group of 16-22, who measure their self-worth in money.

Huyen Su Thien Do (Legend of the1,000-Year-Old Capital), the first Vietnamese historical drama TVseries, which has been shown on national television channel VTV sinceApril, will be cancelled on June 29.  According to VTV last week only the first 20 episodes will be shown, but the show’s producers had already planned to shoot 70 episodes. Huyen Su Thien Do, one of a few shows that were made to celebrateHanoi’s 1,000-year anniversary last year, has received good ratings sofar by viewers who rarely have the chance to watch a pure made-in-Vietnam historical program.As much of the viewership has a favorable opinion of the show, many have expressed concern over the abrupt cancellation.Sao The Gioi, the producing company, said although it had finishedfilming 42 episodes up to now, its contract with VTV only allowed halfm of them to be aired.  More citizens have donated to the "Let’s Build Truong Sa” campaign in the past days, raising the fund to a total of VND2.9 billion (US$141,500) by the end of Monday. On Monday morning, Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) donated a sum of VND200 million ($9,750) to the fund which was launched by Tuoi Tre newspaper and has received wide applause from readers in the last three weeks.It was the sum donated by SJC staffs, said the firm’s Youth Union secretary Phan Thanh Phat.Last week, SJC had drawn VND1 billion ($48,800) from its welfare fund to donate to the Truong Sa fund."Contribution to Truong Sa archipelago has become duty of each

 A seminar on English learning took place on Saturday at Tuoi Tre newspaper’s office at 8:30 with the participation of education experts, a banking student who topped a TOEIC exam last year, and many other Vietnamese students and young people.
This was to mark the launch of Tuoitrenews’ Education column, a window on Vietnam’s education scene which features up-to-date information on education, scholarships, overseas study, courses, and an English study section. The event centered on effective ways to learn English speaking and listening, which can be useful to those who like to improve their command of the foreign language.
